The Brahmatal Trek is one of the most popular winter treks in India and is particularly well known for its beginner-friendly trail. Located in the beautiful state of Uttarakhand, this trek offers a perfect combination of adventure, spirituality, nature, culture, and breathtaking Himalayan landscapes. The journey begins at Lohajung, a small and picturesque village in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. From here, trekkers follow snow-covered trails through dense forests, open meadows, and peaceful Himalayan landscapes before reaching the beautiful Brahmatal Lake. The name Brahmatal comes from two words: “Brahma,” the Hindu God of creation, and “Tal,” meaning lake. According to local belief, Lord Brahma meditated at this sacred lake, giving the destination its spiritual significance. The combination of mythology and natural beauty makes Brahmatal more than just a trekking destination.
The trek reaches an altitude of approximately 12,250 feet (3,734 metres) and generally takes around 7 days to complete, depending on the itinerary and trekking conditions. During winter, the trail is covered in snow, creating a spectacular landscape that attracts adventure enthusiasts from across India and beyond. One of the highlights of the Brahmatal Trek is the panoramic view of the Himalayan peaks. Best Season to visit Brahmatal Trek
Winters (December-March): The best fact about Brahmatal Trek is that it’s the only winter trek which is accessible from December to March in Winters. This is considered to be the best season for the Brahmatal trek. These cold winter months calls for a daytime temperature ranging between 0°C to 2°C. At night, the temperatures may fall to around -5°C to -10°C. Chilly nights asks for some proper warms clothes and clean pair of warm socks after a whole day of trekking.

Summer/Autumn And Spring (May-October): The weather is quite pleasant in the daytime with a cool breeze keeping you refreshed all the way. Day 1 – Delhi to Kausani
Distance: 440 km | Drive: Approx. 11 hours Travel from Delhi to the beautiful hill town of Kausani (6,220 ft). Overnight stay in Kausani.
Day 2 – Kausani to Lohajung
Travel to Lohajung (7,650 ft), the base village for the Brahmatal Trek. Enjoy the scenic mountain drive and prepare for the trek. Overnight stay in Lohajung.
Day 3 – Lohajung to Bekaltal
Trek Distance: 6 km Altitude: 9,900 ft Begin the trek through dense forests and beautiful Himalayan landscapes to Bekaltal. Overnight stay at Bekaltal.
Day 4 – Bekaltal to Brahmatal
Trek Distance: 5 km Altitude: 10,600 ft Trek through snow-covered forests and meadows towards the stunning Brahmatal Lake. Overnight stay at Brahmatal.
Day 5 – Brahmatal to Brahmatal Top & Back
Trek Distance: 6 km Highest Altitude: 12,250 ft Ascend to Brahmatal Top, one of the highest points of the trek, for spectacular Himalayan views. Return to Brahmatal for an overnight stay.
Day 6 – Brahmatal to Lohajung
Trek Distance: 11 km Descend through forests and mountain trails back to Lohajung. Later, travel towards Rishikesh. Distance: 280 km | Approx. 9 hours Overnight stay in Rishikesh.
Day 7 – Rishikesh–Haridwar to Delhi
Distance: Approx. 260 km | Approx. 6 hours After breakfast, depart for Delhi, passing through Rishikesh and Haridwar. Tour concludes in Delhi.
Detailed Itinerary –
Day 1 – Delhi to Kausani
Begin your journey in the morning with a scenic drive from Delhi to Kausani, a peaceful hill station nestled in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. Upon arrival, check in to your hotel and relax after the long drive. Kausani is best experienced at a relaxed pace, allowing you to enjoy its peaceful surroundings and spectacular Himalayan views. The hill station is situated on a ridge surrounded by chir and blue pine forests and is famous for its panoramic views of majestic peaks such as Trishul, Nanda Devi, and Panchachuli. In the evening, take some time to enjoy the serene mountain atmosphere and, if weather conditions permit, witness the beautiful changing colours of the Himalayan peaks as the sun sets. Nature lovers can also explore the surrounding forests, where peaceful streams, chirping birds, and dense greenery create a refreshing escape from city life. Kausani is particularly popular among birdwatchers, with numerous species found in the region, including woodpeckers, barbets, parakeets, robins, and fork-tailed birds. Day 2 – Kausani to Lohajung
After breakfast, begin your journey from Kausani to Lohajung (7,650 ft). Before departing, explore some of the important attractions around Kausani, including the historic Baijnath Temple and the scenic town of Gwaldam. As you continue towards Lohajung, the journey takes you through the winding mountain roads of Uttarakhand. The route offers beautiful views of forested hills, valleys, and the majestic Garhwal mountain ranges. The changing landscapes along the way make the drive an enjoyable part of the adventure. For visitors unfamiliar with mountain roads, the twists and turns can feel challenging, but the stunning scenery makes the journey worthwhile. As you approach Lohajung, keep an eye out for views of Nanda Ghunti Peak, which looks particularly spectacular when illuminated by the warm evening sunlight. Upon arrival in Lohajung, settle into your guesthouse and relax. Day 3 – Lohajung to Bekaltal
Wake up early and prepare for the first day of the Brahmatal Trek. Before beginning the trek, our team will brief you about important safety guidelines, trekking practices, and a few things to keep in mind while walking through the mountain terrain. After breakfast at Lohajung, pack your lunch and begin the ascent towards Bekaltal (9,900 ft). The trail takes you through beautiful Himalayan forests dominated by oak, fir, cedar, and other coniferous trees. As you climb higher, you will be rewarded with magnificent views of Nanda Ghunti Peak and the surrounding mountain ranges. The trek from Lohajung to Bekaltal is approximately 6 km and takes around 4–5 hours, depending on the pace and trail conditions. The gradual ascent offers plenty of opportunities to pause, enjoy the peaceful surroundings, and capture photographs of the spectacular Himalayan landscape. Upon reaching Bekaltal, you will be greeted by the mesmerizing sight of the frozen lake, especially magical during the winter months. Our campsite is located near the lake and is surrounded by beautiful oak forests, creating a peaceful and picturesque setting. After reaching the campsite, enjoy your packed lunch while taking in the serene surroundings. Spend the evening relaxing at the campsite and experiencing the tranquility of the Himalayan wilderness. Day 4 – Bekaltal to Brahmatal
After an exciting stay at Bekaltal, today is the day you finally make your way towards the beautiful Brahmatal Lake (10,600 ft). Start the morning early with a fresh breakfast before beginning the trek through the snow-covered Himalayan landscape. The trail from Bekaltal to Brahmatal is approximately 5 km and takes around 4–5 hours, depending on the pace and weather conditions. As you ascend, the landscape gradually opens up, offering spectacular views of some of the magnificent Himalayan peaks, including Mt. Trishul, Mt. Bithartoli, and Nanda Ghunti. During winter, Brahmatal Lake remains frozen and surrounded by snow, creating a magical setting. Since the lake is relatively small and can be difficult to spot amidst the surrounding snow, our trekking team will guide you safely to the lake and arrange the campsite nearby. The region is also home to the Himalayan Monal, the state bird of Uttarakhand. If you’re lucky, you may spot these colourful birds along the trail, making the journey even more memorable. With stunning mountain views, snow-covered forests, wildlife, and the frozen lake, there will be plenty of opportunities to capture beautiful photographs. As evening approaches, temperatures can drop significantly at this altitude. However, you can relax at the campsite knowing that comfortable tents and warm sleeping bags are provided to help you stay warm through the cold Himalayan night. Day 5 – Brahmatal to Brahmatal Top & Back to Brahmatal
Today is the summit day, and one of the most exciting and memorable days of the Brahmatal Trek. You will trek from the Brahmatal campsite to Brahmatal Top (12,250 ft) and return to the same campsite. Since the summit hike begins very early, usually around 2:00 AM–3:00 AM, it is important to carry a small daypack with only the essentials. You can leave your main backpack safely at the Brahmatal campsite. A headlamp or headtorch is also recommended, as the initial section of the trail will be completed in darkness. After an early start, begin the challenging ascent towards Brahmatal Top. As dawn approaches, the anticipation builds, and reaching the summit in time for sunrise makes the effort truly worthwhile. Watching the first rays of sunlight illuminate the snow-covered Himalayan peaks is one of the most unforgettable experiences of the entire trek. From the summit, enjoy spectacular panoramic views of prominent Himalayan peaks, particularly Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti. The vast snow-covered landscape, changing colours of the sky, and peaceful mountain surroundings create an incredible setting for photography. Take some time to enjoy the summit responsibly, capture photographs, and soak in the views before beginning your descent. After a long and rewarding day, trek safely back to the Brahmatal campsite, where you can rest and recover. Day 06: Brahmatal to Lohajung – 11 KM (6 to 7 hours)
down safely to the Brahmatal Lake campsite. On this day, you might be overwhelmed with a lot of emotions as we will be returning to Lohajung along the same trail. You will be busy recollecting every moment that you had spent on this journey but do not forget to look at the stunning mountains as you descend. We will reach the Lohajung guesthouse by afternoon and you have the option to either rest or explore the village. You can listen to the folklore and mysterious stories from the locals, listen to folk music and try the local cuisine. This will add up a few more memories in your bucket.
Day 07: Lohajung to Rishekesh.
Our team will arrange your return journey, dropping you at your preferred location, whether it’s, Rishikesh, Haridwar, On the day, The route to Rishikesh is extremely
beautiful as you will witness Devprayag and Karnaprayag. Devprayag is the point of convergence of two rivers, namely, Alakananda and Bhagirathi while Karnaprayag remains the meeting point of Mandakini and Pindari.
Day 8: Rishekesh to Delhi.
Rishikesh and Haridwar is a popular pilgrimage and adventure destination, with the two cities located about 22 km apart and offering a spiritual yet youthful vibe. You can plan a trip of 2-3 days to see highlights like Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar and
Lakshman and Ram Jhula in Rishikesh, with many tourists also visiting the ashrams and attending the evening Ganga Aarti. Consider the time of year, with October to March being a good choice for pleasant weather. Night stay in Delhi.
